Polish Films in Oberhausen

The jury of the 59th Oberhausen International Short Film Festival awarded Tomasz Popakul’s animated film Ziegenort and gave special mention to Rogalik, a student film by Paweł Ziemilski.

Principal Prize for Tomasz Popakul

Tomasz Popakul’s animated graduation film Ziegenort, made with supervision from Mariusz Wilczyński, received the festival’s Principal Prize along with a cash prize of 4,000 euros. The jury statement emphasizes that the message of the film, delivered through a series of drawings that portray depth and a multitude of perspectives, is artistically crafted. “This regional and semi-autobiographical tale is haunting in the most beautiful ways.”

Ziegenort, a 2013 animated film, tells the story of a small fishing village in an alternate reality, where the Second World War never happened. All the creatures in this village, man and beast, live by the laws of nature. A father tries to teach his son the fishing trade.

Special Mention of the Jury for Paweł Ziemilski

The documentary student film Rogalik was directed by Paweł Ziemilski, a student at the National Film School in Łódź, and supervised by Jacek Bławut. Rogalik received Special Mention of the Jury.

Rogalik depicts the Polish countryside and the pastimes of the residents of a small village called Rogalik. The film was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

The 59th Oberhausen International Short Film Festival ran from May 2 through May 7, 2013.
