Polish Films in Palm Springs

January 3 brought the opening of the 24th Palm Springs International Film Festival. This year’s festival lineup features several films co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

80 milionów (80 Million) in Palm Springs

One of the 42 films screening in the Best Foreign Language Film Competition and competing for the award of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, is the Polish feature 80 milionów (80 Million) by Waldemar Krzystek. The festival’s synopsis of Poland’s Academy Award® candidate states that the film is an “exciting political thriller about the struggle against Communism in Poland 1981, full of suspense, humor and surprising twists and turns”. Waldemar Krzystek’s 80 Million will compete for the FIPRESCI award, which will be presented by a jury of international film critics.

World Cinema Now

The out-of-competition World Cinema Now section of the Palm Springs IFF will showcase 76 films from around the world. The lineup of this section includes several Polish titles. Director Andrzej Jakimowski will be a guest at Palm Springs, presenting his latest feature Imagine. Filip Marczewski’s feature Bez wstydu (Shameless) will also screen in this section. Polish director Katarzyna Klimkiewicz is also a guest of the festival and will hold a Q&A session after the screening of her feature debut Flying Blind.
