Polish Films in Toronto

Audiences will have a chance to see a total of six Polish films and co-productions at the 36th Toronto International Film Festival, which starts today.

Róża (Rosa) by Wojciech Smarzowski and Sponsoring (Elles) by Małgorzata Szumowska will have their world premieres in Toronto, in the Contemporary World Cinema and Special Presentations sections respectively. The festival lineup also features Poland’s foreign language Academy Award candidate W ciemności (In Darkness) – the latest feature from Agnieszka Holland (Special Presentations), Latająca maszyna (The Flying Machine) by Geoff Lindsey, Martin Clapp and Marek Skrobecki (TIFF Kids), Kobieta z piątej dzielnicy (Woman in the Fifth) by Paweł Pawlikowski (Special Presentations), and Znieważona ziemia (La terre outragee) by Michale Boganim (Contemporary World Cinema). All films screening in Toronto were co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

The Toronto International Film Festival is one of the top film events in North America. Organized annually since 1976, TIFF is a review of the latest trends in world cinema, with the only awards being those of the festival audience.

This year’s festival is accompanied by an exhibition dedicated to Krzysztof Kieślowski, organized by the Museum of Cinematography in Łódź to commemorate the 70th anniversary of his birth and the 15th anniversary of his death.

The exhibition consists of 50 posters from the years 1976 to 1994, and features posters from Poland, Spain, Italy, Israel, Japan, and France.  The exhibition is open to audiences at the Stream Whistle Gallery until September 10, and later at Metro Hall Rotunda from September 12 through September 17.

The exhibition is co-financed by the Polish Film Institute and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, and supported by the General Consulate of the Republic of Poland in Toronto and by the YouNxt Association in Toronto.

The Toronto International Film Festival runs through September 18.
