Polish Films on Toronto Star List

The Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival is now on in Toronto. The Canadian daily newspaper Toronto Star made a list of the festival’s ten most interesting titles, choosing from among 199 films from 43 countries. The list includes two Polish documentaries.

Established in 1892, the Toronto Star is a Canadian daily newspaper, circulating over 400,000 copies per day. The list, made by Hot Docs programming director Sean Farnel, features ten of the festival’s most interesting titles, and includes Koniec Rosji (At the Edge of Russia) by Michał Marczak and Phnom Penh Lullaby by Paweł Kloc. Farnel describes Kloc’s documentary as a film that “pushes the boundaries of a traditional doc in astounding ways”.

Other Polish titles featured in the festival lineup include the winner at this year’s Sundance film festival Poza zasięgiem (Out of Reach) by Jakub Stożek and Takie życie…  (That’s Life), the documentary debut from Daniel Zieliński, a student at the National Film School in Łódź. That’s Life previously screened at the One World festival in Prague. The Special Screenings section of Hot Docs also includes the Leipzig and Prague award-winning documentary Vodka Factory by Jerzy Śladkowski,  made in co-production between Sweden and Poland.

This year’s edition of Hot Docs runs through May 8.
