Polish Films Recognized in Tallinn

November 30 brought the closing of the 18th Black Nights International Film Festival in Tallinn. The focus on Polish cinema featured screenings of over 20 Polish films; Polish presence at the festival was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

Special Mention for Our Curse

The 15th edition of the Sleepwalkers International Short Film Competition verdict brought special mention for Tomasz Śliwiński’s film Nasza klątwa (Our Curse), the acclaimed Academy Award® candidate in the short documentary category. The film screened in the festival’s special section dedicated to films from the Baltic region. The winning film in this section was Cupcake, a film by Jane Magnusson, which also won the Short Grand Prix in the short film competition at the 30th Warsaw Film Festival.

Best Project Award for Polish Project Entitled The Wounded Beast

Director Piotr Trzaskalski and producer Roman Jędrkowiak of ADHD Warsaw received the Best Project Award of the Baltic Event International Co-Production Forum. The award is a cash prize of 5,000 euros for post-production of their project entitled The Wounded Beast. The experts who selected the winning project noted that The Wounded Beast was recognized for the way it transposed a crime story to a realistic European filmmaking tradition that emphasizes human relations and values.

2014 Black Nights: Spotlight on Polish Cinema

The Spotlight on Polish Cinema featured a selection of over 20 Polish films, including Onirica – Psie Pole (Field of Dogs) by Lech Majewski, Płynące wieżowce (Floating Skyscrapers) by Tomasz Wasilewski, Strefa nagości (Nude Area) by Urszula Antoniak, Obce ciało (Foreign Body) by Krzysztof Zanussi, Ostatnie piętro (The Last Floor) by Tadeusz Król, Obywatel (Citizen) by Jerzy Stuhr, as well as classics of Polish cinema, animated films, short films, and documentaries. The festival also brought a Special Award for Krzysztof Zanussi and a Lifetime Achievement Award for Maja Komorowska.
