Polish Presence in San Sebastián

Ci, którzy umierają (The Dead and the Living), a co-production between Austria, Poland and Germany directed by Barbara Albert and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, will screen in Main Competition at the 60th San Sebastián International Film Festival. The competition will open with a screening of the US production Arbitrage by Nicholas Jarecki – a film that was produced in cooperation with Poland-based Alvernia Studios. Meanwhile the festival section dedicated to student films features Święto zmarłych (All Souls’ Day), a film directed by Aleksandra Terpińska.

Ci, którzy umierają (The Dead and the Living)

Ci, którzy umierają (The Dead and the Living), a film by Austrian director Barbara Albert, is a story of losing one’s homeland and discovering one’s own identity, but also about responsibility and hope. 25-year-old Sita travels from Berlin to Vienna, Warsaw and Romania to discover the dark history of her family from the time of the Second World War. The Dead and the Living is a co-production between Austria, Poland and Germany, co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. The film’s Polish co-producer is Alex Stern.

Arbitrage

Arbitrage is a thriller about love and loyalty in the world of high finance. The film’s main character is 60-year-old Robert Miller, an American businessman who is not only an example of the model success story, but also has a very happy family life. But things are not always as they seem. Miller desperately tries to sell his financial empire before his debts and fraud come to light. He is also having an affair with a French arts dealer. Arbitrage is the feature debut from director Nicholas Jarecki, starring Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon. The film was co-produced by Alvernia Production, while Alvernia Studios was the company responsible for special effects.

Święto zmarłych (All Souls’ Day)

Święto zmarłych (All Souls’ Day), a student film by Aleksandra Terpińska, will screen at the San Sebastián Film Festival within the framework of the 11th International Film Students Meeting programme, which runs from September 26 through September 28. All Souls’ Day is the story of Lena, a young woman who searches for her long-lost family on her eighteenth birthday. The film was made at the Radio and Television Department of the University of Silesia in Katowice. All Souls’ Day was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

San Sebastián International Film Festival

Organized annually since 1953, the San Sebastián International Film Festival has grown to be one of the key film events in the world. Polish filmmakers awarded during previous editions of the festival include Janusz Morgenstern (Silver Shell Award for Best Director in 1967 for his film Jowita), Andrzej Wajda (Golden Shell Award in 1980 for his film Dyrygent), and Radosław Piwowarski (Golden Shell Award in 1985 for his film Yesterday).

 

The 60th San Sebastián International Film Festival runs from September 21 through September 29, 2012.
