Polish productions of Skolimowski and Smoczyńska in Cannes

Co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, the films „EO” by Jerzy Skolimowski and „Silent Twins” by Agnieszka Smoczyńska will be presented at the International Film Festival in Cannes. The first of them will compete in the Main Competition for the Palme d’Or, the second one in the competition section of Un Certain Regard. Moreover, in the Directors’ Fortnight section will be presented „Pamfir” (dir. Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk). The 75th edition of the festival will be held on May 17-28, 2022.

In the description of the film „EO” we read that it is „the story of a simple donkey, in an increasingly complex reality. Passed from hand to hand, the animal meets both good and bad people on its way. The story is a cinematic allegory, and the title of the film alludes to the sound that donkeys make.”

The picture is a Polish-Italian co-production. Ewa Piaskowska is the co-author of the script, along with Jerzy Skolimowski. The authors of the photos are: Michał Dymek, Michał Englert and Paweł Edelman, Tomasz Morawski is the production manager, and Agnieszka Glińska is responsible for the editing. The cast of the film includes, among others Lorenzo Zurzolo, Sandra Drzymalska, Mateusz Kościukiewicz and Tomasz Organek.

„Silent Twins”

In turn, the new film by Agnieszka Smoczyńska is the true story of June and Jennifer Gibbons – black twins who, being children, became silent to the outside world. At the same time, in the seclusion of their room, they conducted a creative literary dialogue, but „over time, their relationship turned into a toxic relationship – dangerous both for them and for their environment.”

The English-language film is a Polish-British co-production, distributed worldwide by Focus Features. The film stars Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrance. Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska and Bogna Szewczyk (Madants) and Ewa Puszczyńska (Extreme Emiotions) are responsible for the production of „Silent Twins”. The music was composed by Marcin Macuk and Zuzanna Wrońska. The author of the pictures is Jakub Kijowski, and the editor – Agnieszka Glińska. Andrea Seigel’s screenplay is adapted from the book „The Silent Twins” by Marjorie Wallace. The Polish distributor of the film is Gutek Film.

„Pamfir”

A co-production of four countries: Ukraine, Poland, France and Chile entitled „Pamfir” (dir. Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk) will be presented in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs (Directors ’Fortnight) section. The main roles were played by: Oleksandr Yatsentyuk, Stanislav Potiak and Solomiya Kyrylova. The producers of the film are: Aleksandra Kostina (BOSONFILM), Laura Briand (LES FILMS D’ICI), Bogna Szewczyk, Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska (MADANTS) and Giancarlo Nasz (QUIJOTE FILMS). In the description of the film we read: Western Ukraine, on the eve of the traditional Malanka carnival. Pamfir returns to the family after months of absence. Soon, he is forced to face his turbulent past again when his only child starts a fire in the house of prayer. In order to pay off his son’s guilt, Pamfir decides to take a risky journey with irreversible consequences.
