"REFUGIADO" WINS ARGENTINIAN FILM ACADEMY AWARDS

Refugiado, a Polish-Argentinian co-production co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, received the awards of the Argentinian Film Academy for Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Director.

Another Award for Polish-Argentinian Co-Production Refugiado

At this year’s edition of the Premio SUR awards of the Argentinian Film Academy, Refugiado received awards in four top categories. Diego Lerman’s feature was recognized as Best Film and received awards for Best Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Director. In June, the film had been voted Best Film of 2014 by the Argentinian Film Critics Association. Refugiado has also received awards at the 17th RiverRun International Film Festival in Winston-Salem, the 16th Havana Film Festival, and the 50th Chicago International Film Festival.

World Premiere in Cannes

Refugiado has been dubbed an urban road movie and a unique type of family thriller. The film tells the story of concealed domestic violence as seen through the eyes of a child. Seven-year-old Matias is the victim of the conflict between his mother and father; the boy tries everything in his power to save the world he knows. Refugiado had its world premiere at the 67th Cannes International Film Festival, screening in Directors’ Fortnight.

Refugiado Lensed by Wojciech Staroń

The film was directed by Argentinian filmmaker Diego Lerman, director of award-winning films such as The Invisible Eye, Meanwhile, and Suddenly. Refugiado’s director of photography was Wojciech Staroń, whose latest film Bracia (Brothers) recently received special mention in the Feature-Length Documentary Competition at the Camerimage Film Festival. The Polish producer of Refugiado is Małgorzata Staroń of Staron-Film. Distribution in Poland is handled by the New Horizons Association. The film was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

Argentinian Film Academy

The Argentinian Film Academy was established in 2005 and is based in Buenos Aires. Its mission is to promote Argentinian cinema and organize annual film awards, the equivalent of Poland’s Eagle awards (Orły). The Argentinian Film Academy also selects Argentina’s entry for the Academy Awards, the Goya awards of the Spanish Academy of Cinematic Art and Science, and the Ariel awards of the Mexican Academy of Film.
