Robert Więckiewicz Awarded in Tokyo

At the closing ceremony of the 27th Tokyo International Film Festival, Robert Więckiewicz received the Best Actor Award for his performance in Pod Mocnym Aniołem (The Mighty Angel), a film directed by Wojciech Smarzowski and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

Best Actor Award, Films in Competition

The Tokyo screening of Pod Mocnym Aniołem (The Mighty Angel) marked the film’s Asian premiere. In addition to this Polish feature, the festival’s Main Competition lineup featured 14 films from around the world. Robert Więckiewicz’s performance was judged to be the winning role by jury members James Gunn, John H. Lee, Robert Luketic, Eric Khoo, Debbie McWilliams, and Hiroshi Shinagawa. The Best Actress Award went to Rie Miyazawa for her performance in Pale Moon, a Japanese film that also received the Audience Award. The Grand Prize of the 27th Tokyo International Film Festival went to Heaven Knows What, a US production directed by two brothers – Josh and Ben Safdie, who also received the Best Director Award.

Dom zły (Dark House) in Tokyo

Pod Mocnym Aniołem (The Mighty Angel) is not the first film from director Wojciech Smarzowski to screen in competition at the Tokyo International Film Festival. In 2009, his previous film Dom zły (Dark House) was also in the running for the festival’s grand prize. In 2008, Sergei Dvortsevoy’s Tulpan received the festival’s top prize, while Jerzy Skolimowski’s Cztery noce z Anną (Four Nights with Anna) received the Special Jury Prize.
