Shooting Commences on Anne Fontaine's "Innocent"

The principal photography period of Innocent, a film directed by Anne Fontaine and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, has commenced. Produced by Mandarin Cinema and Aeroplan Film, the project will be shot entirely in Poland.

A French Doctor in Post-War Poland

The film is set in Poland in the winter of 1945. Mathilde Beaulieu (Lou de Lâage) is a young intern working for the local branch of the French Red Cross – they are on a mission to find, treat and repatriate French survivors of the Nazi concentration camps. One day, a Polish nun arrives at the hospital. In poor French, she begs Mathilde to come to her convent. Mathilde’s life and beliefs change when she discovers that several of the nuns in the convent located just outside her hospital are in advanced stages of pregnancy.

The script for Innocent (aka Agnus Dei), a film directed by Anne Fontaine (Coco Chanel, Adore), was written by Sabrina B. Karine, Alice Vial, Anne Fontaine and Pascal Bonitzer, and is based on a true story.

The Cast

The film features performances by Lou de Lâage (Respire, Jappeloup – nominated for a Cesar Award in the Most Promising Actress category), Vincent Macaigne (Eden) and Polish actresses Agata Kulesza (Ida), Agata Buzek [Rewers (The Reverse)] and Joanna Kulig [Sponsoring (Elles) and Ida].

A Film Supported by the Polish Film Institute

The film is produced by Eric and Nicolas Altmayer of Mandarin Cinema (Bertrand Bonello’s Saint Laurent) and Philippe Carcassonne, and co-produced by Eliza Oczkowska and Klaudia Śmieja of Aeroplan Film (Poland), Mars Films, France 2 Cinema and Scope Picture (Belgium), and supported by Film Commission Poland. Lensed by Caroline Champetier, Innocent is being filmed entirely in Poland, and shooting is scheduled to wrap in early March. Also working on the film are Polish production designer Joanna Macha and costume designer Katarzyna Lewińska. International sales are handled by Film Distribution. The film is co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.
