"The Mighty Angel" in Tokyo

Pod Mocnym Aniołem (The Mighty Angel), a film directed by Wojciech Smarzowski and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, will screen in competition at the Tokyo International Film Festival, which runs from October 23 through October 31.

Films in Competition

Competition screenings will mark either world premieres or Asian premieres of the competing films. The Polish feature will screen alongside 14 other films from around the world.

Pod Mocnym Aniołem (The Mighty Angel) Awarded in Gdynia

Most recently, Wojciech Smarzowski’s latest feature received the Silver Lions Award at the 39th Gdynia Film Festival. The Gdynia fest also brought awards for Paweł Laskowski for Best Editing and Mikołaj Trzaska for Best Original Score. The screenplay is based on Jerzy Pilch’s novel “Pod Mocnym Aniołem,” and the film focuses on a man struggling with alcoholism. Pod Mocnym Aniołem (The Mighty Angel) was produced by Profil Film and co-produced by Fundacja EDM Plus, HBO Polska, the Krakow Festival Office, Telewizja Polska, Mojotribe, and Kino Świat. The film was also co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

Dom zły (Dark House) in Tokyo

Pod Mocnym Aniołem (The Mighty Angel) is not the first film by director Wojciech Smarzowski to screen in competition at the Tokyo International Film Festival. In 2009, his previous feature Dom zły (Dark House) also competed for the festival’s top prize. In 2008, Sergei Dvortsevoy’s Tulpan receive the grand prize, while Jerzy Skolimowski’s Cztery noce z Anną (Four Nights with Anna) received the Special Jury Prize.
