12th T-Mobile New Horizons Winners

July 29, 2012 brought the 12th edition of the T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival to a close. The festival’s Grand Prix went to De jueves a domingo (From Thursday Till Sunday), a co-production between Chile and the Netherlands directed by Dominga Sotomayor Castillo. Twelve international films competed for the festival’s top prize. The T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

From Thursday Till Sunday Wins Grand Prix

The Main Competition International Jury (jury members Urszula Antoniak, Naomi Kawase, Lav Diaz, Amat Escalante, and Przemysław Wojcieszek) awarded the festival’s Grand Prix and a cash prize of 20,000 EUR to De jueves a domingo (From Thursday Till Sunday), directed by Dominga Sotomayor Castillo. Twelve international films competed for the festival’s top prize.

FIPRESCI Award for Neighbouring Sounds

For the third time in the festival’s history, members of the International Federation of Film Critics awarded the FIPRESCI Award. This recognition went to the film O som ao redor (Neighbouring Sounds) by Kleber Mendonça Filho. FIPRESCI jury members included Alison Frank, Müge Turan, and Ola Salwa. The Audience Award went to Donoma by Djin Carrénard.

Punk Syndrome Wins Films on Art International Competition

The Films on Art International Competition Jury (jury members: Zbigniew Libera, James Benning, Susanne Sachse, Rebecca De Pas, and Sean Farnel) awarded the 10,000 EUR cash prize to Kovasikajuttu (Punk Syndrome), directed by Jukki Kärkkäinen and Jani-Petteri Passi.

European Short Film Competition

The winner of the European Short Film Competition in the animation category was Bobby Yeah by Robert Morgan. Manque de preuves (Without Evidence) by Hayoun Kwon was voted best film in the documentary category, while Des Gespents des Glück (The Ghost of Happiness) by Max Philipp Schmid received the prize for best experimental film. This competition was judged by jury members Antoni Komasa-Łazarkiewicz, Urszula Skassa, and Jakub Czekaj.

Polish Short Film Competition

The winner of the Polish Short Film Competition in the animation category was Pomarańczarka (Oranges) by Marta Szymańska. Gwizdek (The Whistle) by Grzegorz Zariczny was voted best documentary, while Echo by Marcin Filipowicz won the prize for best short feature. The winners were selected by an international jury – Florian Weghorn, Ed Lawrenson, and Anna MacDonald. The London Film Academy Award went to Saszka, Saszka (Sashka, Sashka) by Michał Szcześniak.

Festival Supported by the Polish Film Institute

The 12th edition of the T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival was organized in Wrocław and ran from July 19 to July 29, 2012. Over the course of eleven days, a total of 469 films screened (including 226 feature-length films) from 52 different countries. 160 of these films had their Polish premiere at the festival. The T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.
