„Woman on the Roof” and „January” appreciated at the Tribeca Film Festival

Two awards at the Tribeca Film Festival – Best Feature Award („Woman on the Roof”) and the Best Tribeca International Narrative Competition („January”) went to the Polish filmmakers. Both productions were supported by the Polish Film Institute. The program of the New York Independent Film Festival 2022, created by Robert de Niro, includes 109 full-length films.

Best Feature Award: „Woman on the Roof”

The award for the best role went to Dorota Pomykala, who played the role of a 60-year-old midwife in Anna Jadowska’s film „Woman on the Roof”, who is great in her profession, but even better at hiding her needs and feelings. Her only pleasure during the day is sneaking out to the roof of the block to light a cigarette. Until the day she… robs a bank.

The film is a Polish-French-Swedish co-production. The above-mentioned Anna Jadowska is responsible for the script and direction, Ita Zbroniec-Zajt for the cinematography, Katharina Nuttal and Linus Andersson for the music, Julia Grégory for the editing, Anna Pabisiak for the set design, Maja Skrzypek for the costumes, and Roman Dymny for the sound.

The main roles include not only Dorota Pomykala, but also Bogdan Koka and Adam Bobik. The producers of the film are Maria Blicharska, Mimmi Spång, Anna-Maria Kantarius and Damien McDonald.

Best Tribeca International Narrative Competition award: January”

The award for the best international fiction film went to the authors of the Polish-Lithuanian-Latvian co-production „January”. This is a personal love story set in early 1991, at a time when Latvia regained independence from the Soviet Union. For the local society, January was the month in which the euphoria of joint struggle for freedom opened people to return from many years of internal emigration.

The movie was directed and written by Viesturs Kairiss. Wojciech Staroń is the cinematographer, Armands Začs is responsible for editing, Ieva Jurjāne is responsible for the set design, Jonas Maksvytis for the music, and Rūta Lečaitė for the sound. The cast includes Kārlis Arnolds Avots, Alise Danovska and Sandis Runge. The producers of the film are Inese Boka-Grūbe and Gints Grūbe, and the Polish co-producer – Małgorzata Staroń.

Both appreciated films had their world premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival.
