"Rosa": World Premiere in Toronto

Róża (Rosa) by Wojciech Smarzowski will screen at the 36th Toronto International Film Festival in the Contemporary World Cinema section, alongside Terre outragée (Land of Oblivion) by Michale Boganim. Both films were co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. Rosa's screening at the Toronto IFF will mark the film's world premiere.

"Frozen Stories" Nominated for EFA

At the 64th Locarno International Film Festival, the film Opowieści z chłodni (Frozen Stories) by Grzegorz Jaroszuk received a nomination for the European Film Awards in the Best Short Film category.

"The Flying Machine" in Toronto

Latająca maszyna (The Flying Machine) will screen in the Children's Film Competition of the 36th Toronto International Film Festival. TIFF will also screen Sponsoring (Elles) by Małgorzata Szumowska and Kobieta z piątek dzielnicy (The Woman from the Fifth) by Paweł Pawlikowski. All three films are international co-productions, co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. The last two films will have their international premiere in Toronto.

"Black Thursday" in Montreal

Czarny czwartek. Janek Wiśniewski padł (Black Thursday), the latest film from Antoni Krauze, will screen in Main Competition at the 35th Montreal International Film Festival. Black Thursday will compete for the festival's grand prize against Kret (The Mole) by Rafael Lewandowski. Both films were co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. The Montreal screenings will also mark both films' world premiere.

"Fear of Falling" at 35th Montreal IFF

Lęk wysokości (Fear of Falling), the feature debut from Bartosz Konopka, will screen in the First Films World Competition at the 35th Montreal International Film Festival. This festival section features a lineup of 26 films from 21 countries.

"Courage" Premieres in Busan

The international premiere of Wymyk (Courage) by Greg Zglinski will take place at the Busan International Film Festival, one of the top film events in Asia. Courage is featured in the lineup of the Flash Forward competition section that focuses on films by first- and second-time directors from outside Asia. At last year's festival, special mention of the jury in the Flash Forward section went to Erratum by Marek Lechki.

The organizers of three international film festivals - in Montreal, Toronto and Venice - announced the official line-ups. Six Polish productions and co-productions have been selected to be screened during those events.

Punto y Raya: Poles in Competition

The Punto y Raya experimental film competition, taking place this year at the Reina Sofía National Museum in Madrid, includes two films by Polish filmmakers: p.e.r.f.o.r.m.a.n.c.e. by Karolina Głusiec (representing the United Kingdom), and AE by Marcin Giżycki.

"Crulic" Premieres in Locarno

August 7 will mark the world premiere of the Polish-Romanian co-prodution Crulic - droga na drugą stronę (Crulic) at the Locarno Film Festival. Crulic, directed by Anca Damian, will screen in the festival's Main Competition.

Two Films from Łódź at Locarno

Films from the National Film School in Łódź continue their lucky streak. Two Łódź productions: Opowieści z chłodni by Grzegorz Jaroszuk and Bez śniegu by Magnus von Horn will screen in the Pardi di domani / Leopards of Tomorrow short film competition of the 64th Locarno International Film Festival.

After succeeding in France and Canada, the animated Paths of Hate by Damian Nenow received two top awards at the International Animated Film Festival that accompanied the tenth Mundos Digitales conference in La Coruna, Spain.

"In Darkness": Polish Oscar Candidate

The Oscar Committee unanimously chose W ciemności (In Darkness) by Agnieszka Holland as the Polish candidate for the Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

W ciemności (In Darkness) was made in co-production between Poland, Germany, and Canada. It tells the story of Leopold Socha, a Polish man who went from smalltime crook to hero during the course of the Second World War. Risking his own life and the lives of his loved ones, he saves a dozen men, women, and children from certain extermination and helps them survive almost 14 months in hiding.

Koszałka Awarded at Karlovy Vary

The top prize in the Documentary Film Competition for films under 30 minutes in length at the closing gala of the 46th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival went to Marcin Koszałka for his film Deklaracja nieśmiertelności (The Declaration of Immortality).

Nomination for "Essential Killing"

The third day of the 46th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival brought the announcement of nominations for the Lux Prize - the film award of the European Parliament. One of the ten nominated titles is Essential Killing by Jerzy Skolimowski.

Three Awards for "Joanna" in Moscow

Urszula Grabowska, who played the title role in Joanna by Feliks Falk, received the Silver St. George Award for Best Actress at the 33rd Moscow International Film Festival, which closed on July 2. Joanna also received the Award of  Russian Journalists and the Award of Russian Film Clubs.

Jan Komasa received the Blue Angel award for Best Director at the 19th edition of the Art Film Fest International Film Festival. His feature debut Sala samobójców (Suicide Room) screened in Main Competition, which featured a total of 15 films, including The Hunter by Bakur Bakuradze.
