Black Nights 2014: Spotlight on Polish Cinema

Over 20 Polish films will be shown at the 18th Black Nights International Film Festival in Tallinn. The event runs from November 14 through November 30, 2014. Polish presence at the festival is co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

"Joanna" Nominated

On November 12, nominations for the Cinema Eye Honors, one of the top awards in the world of documentary filmmaking, were announced at Copenhagen's CPH:DOX festival. Among five titles nominated in the short film category is Joanna, a film directed by Aneta Kopacz and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

"Ida" Nominated for European Film Awards in Four Categories

Ida, a film directed by Paweł Pawlikowski and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, received a total of five nominations for this year's European Film Awards: European Film, European Director (Paweł Pawlikowski), European Screenwriter (Paweł Pawlikowski and Rebecca Lenkiewicz), and two nominations for European Actress (Agata Kulesza and Agata Trzebuchowska). Łukasz Żal and Ryszard Lenczewski have been awarded the Carlo Di Palma Prize for European Cinematographer.

"Wałęsa" in France and Belgium

Awards for Polish Films

Abu Haraz, a film by Maciej Drygas, received the Grand Prize at the Ânûû-Rû Âboro Film Festival in New Caledonia, while at the Al Jazeera Documentary Film Festival in Qatar, Łukasz Żal received the Best Cinematography Award for his work on Lewa połowa twarzy (Left Side of the Face) by Marcin Bortkiewicz, and Bartłomiej Świderski received the Best Director Award for his film Sati.

On October 20, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its short list of contenders for the Academy Award in the Documentary Short Subject category. This selection of eight films includes two films co-financed by the Polish Film Institute - Joanna, a film by Aneta Kopacz (Wajda Studio), and Nasza klątwa (Our Curse), a film by Tomasz Śliwiński (Warsaw Film School).

The Outcome of the WCOS 2014

Recently Warsaw hosted the Third World Conference of Screenwriters, a two-day event for 170 screenwriters from around the world. The event, co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, closed with the Warsaw Resolution, which asserts the essential role of the screenwriter in the creative process.
