On the Set of Wałęsa

We visited the set of Wałęsa, a film co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. Wałęsa, the latest production by director Andrzej Wajda, focuses on the story of legendary Solidarity leader Lech Wałęsa, following his life from the early 1970s until the time when he was elected President.

"Battleheart" in Locarno

Serce do walki (Battleheart) by Tomasz Matuszczak is in official selection at the 65th Locarno International Film Festival, which launches on August 1. Battleheart, co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, will screen in the Pardi di domani / Leopards of Tomorrow international short film competition.

Karlovy Vary: Lubos Wins Best Actor

The 47th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival has come to an end. The closing gala of this year's festival brought the presentation of the Crystal Globes awards. The winner in the Best Actor category was Polish actor Eryk Lubos for his performance in Zabić bobra (To Kill a Beaver) by Jan Jakub Kolski. The film received support from the Polish Film Institute. Lubos shares the Best Actor award with Henrik Rafaelsen (The Almost Man). Special Mention in Main Competition also went to the actors of Polski film by Marek Najbrt. The festival's Grand Prize went to The Almost Man.

July 3 brought the world premiere o Jan Jakub Kolski's feature Zabić bobra (To Kill a Beaver) at the 47th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The film received support from the Polish Film Institute.

July 2 marked the international premiere of Bez wstydu (Shameless) by Filip Marczewski at the 47th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Shameless features in the festival's East of the West competition.

Poland-India Agreement

An audiovisual co-production agreement between Poland and India was signed on July 4 at the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in Warsaw. In addition to film co-production, the agreement covers other types of production, mainly television.

June 24 marked the international premiere of 80 milionów (80 Million) by Waldemar Krzystek, which took place at the "Oktyabr" Festival Centre of the 34th Moscow International Film Festival. The film was shown in Main Competition of the Moscow International Film Festival.

The 65th Locarno International Film Festival will include a presentation of the latest films from Eastern Europe, which will take place between August 4 and August 6, 2012. The Polish Film Institute is one of the partners in organizing this event.

Polish Films Win Awards in the USA

Róża (Rosa) by Wojciech Smarzowski and Jeż Jerzy (Jeż Jerzy: The Movie) by Wojtek Wawszczyk, Jakub Tarkowski and Tomasz Leśniak, two films co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, received awards at the 15th Brooklyn Film Festival in New York.

"Crulic" Wins Annecy

The Polish-Romanian co-production Droga na drugą stronę (Crulic - The Path to Beyond) received the Grand Prize in the feature film competition at the 36th Annecy International Animated Film Festival, which closed on June 9. The film was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

"80 Million" and Docs in Moscow

80 milionów (80 Million) by Waldemar Krzystek will screen in main competition at the 34th Moscow International Film Festival, which runs from June 21 through June 30, 2012. The festival lineup also features two Polish documentaries: Decrescendo by Marta Minorowicz and Argentyńska lekcja (Argentine Lesson) by Wojciech Staroń. All three films were co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

Winners of 52nd Krakow IFF

The closing gala of the 52nd Krakow Film Festival was held on June 3 in Krakow's Kijów cinema. The grand prize in the international documentary competition went to Swedish director Peter Gerdehag for his film Women with Cows. The 52nd Krakow Film Festival was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

Polish Industry Rep in Screen Int'l

The Cannes edition of Screen International featured a prestigious list of Future Leaders in Sales and Acquisitions, which included a Polish film professional. Marcin Wąs, programming and distribution director at Best Film was named one of the world's most promising sales and acquisitions managers. The Screen International staff chose a total of 50 professionals from the world distribution business, based on the suggestions of company heads and recommendations by fellow representatives of the sales&acquisitions market.
